No. 2 Iowa bounces back behind Caitlin Clark's 35-point game

USA -- Iowa City No. 2 Iowa trounced Drake 113-90 on Sunday after its first loss of the season. Caitlin Clark had 35 points and 10 assists while Kate Martin had a career-high 25 points.

Clark passed Kelsey Plum for the most Division I 30-point games over the past 25 seasons with 39, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

"Coach Bluder challenged us when we came back to practice after the K-State game, and I thought we responded really well," said Clark.

The Hawkeyes (4-1) scored a program-record 64 points in the first half after losing 65-58 to Kansas State on Thursday. They shot 75% in the quarter and 65% in the half. Iowa had 27 assists, 13 turnovers.

"We played a little better than Thursday night, which I was thankful for," said Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. "We came out and resumed playing Iowa basketball -- high assists, low turnovers."

In Thursday's game, Bluder stated the Hawkeyes "didn't get into a groove". "I just thought our energy level was a lot better out there tonight," Bluder. "We were more focused."

Clark, the reigning national Player of the Year and a unanimous Associated Press preseason All-American, rebounded from one of her worst shooting nights by making 14 of 22 shots, including 5 of 11 3-pointers. Clark shot 9-of-32 from the floor and 2-of-16 from 3-point range on Thursday.

"I kind of shot it with confidence tonight," said Martin, who made her first three 3-pointers of the season. All week, my teammates and coaches encouraged me. Not making a 3 in the first four games was frustrating. I was delighted I could defeat them tonight."
